In an unpleasant turn for the Yes Campaign, a study has shown that Scotland gains more from the treasury than it gives up in oil revenues. I’m also a little sceptical about Scottish government claims that we contribute as much as the UK average without oil revenues. Last infographic I saw that spelled everything out in simplified English for simpletons like me showed that oil revenues were what brought us above the UK average.
Of course, the oil and gas market is difficult at best to predict, so the study’s findings are best taken with a little scepticism. Bare in mind that the UK had just had another bumper licensing round. Either Westminster wants to use up all the oil before 2016, or quite a few influential people think there’s still plenty life left in the North Sea.
